Lanett on a mission for Sires triumph

- PETER STAPLES

TALENTED two-year-old filly Gee Gee Lanett could not have been more impressive in winning the $25,000 Autumn 2YO in Hobart last Sunday, with the victory almost ensuring she will be aimed at the $30,000 Sires Produce Stakes over 1400m in Launceston next month.

The Stuart Gandy-trained filly has won three of her past four starts, with the latest clearly her most impressive against her own age group. But two starts back she ran home powerfully to finish third to Step The Pedal in an open fillies and mares feature race in Hobart.

After her latest win Gandy said the Sires Produce looked a logical step for the daughter of Wordsmith.

“Provided the filly is in good order we’ll most likely aim her at the Sires Produce, but I’ll make my mind up closer to the race,” Gandy said.

The filly’s dam, Vivre La Nett, won the 2007 3YO Tasmanian Guineas with French rider Remi Tremsal aboard, and that was against a strong field of colts and geldings that included Wealthy Lad, Royal Work and National Trust.

Gandy also is likely to have Geegee Blackprince engaged in the Sires, which has always been the main objective for the gelded son of Americain.

The half-brother to champ- ion Geegees Blackflash is yet to win from four starts this season, but his most recent sixth behind Striking Prospect in Hobart last Sunday (1400m) can be discounted as he was ridden on the speed which is the opposite of how he had been ridden in the past.

While Gandy will take at least a two-pronged attack into the Sires, Longford trainer John Blacker is hoping Double You Tee measures up and finds his way into the race.

Double You Tee (Written Tycoon-Korn Broke) was the sale topper at the 2016 Tasmania Magic Millions Yearling sale with Blacker spending $115,000 on the flashy colt and he was syndicated before the trainer left the sale ring. The colt makes his debut at Devonport on Sunday in the first race on the nine-event card and while Blacker doesn’t expect too much he is hoping he can do enough to give him encouragement to proceed to the Sires.

“The 1000m on Sunday will probably be too short for Double You Tee, but I’m hoping to get him to the Sires because I’m sure he will run out a strong 1400m,” Blacker said.

“He will improve on whatever he does on Sunday and if he happened to win it would be a big bonus.”
