State’s $1m extra to help refugees

THE State Government will commit an additional $1 million to support refugees entering the state.

Tasmania will accept up to 500 of an additional national intake of 12,000 refugees flee- ing conflict in Iraq and Syria.

Parliament­ary Secretary to the Premier Sarah Courtney said the Government would submit an additional $1 million to “wraparound’’ services for all humanitari­an arrivals to “ensure the best possible settlement outcomes”. Funding recipients include the Multicultu­ral Council of Tasmania, the Migrant Resource Centre in northern and southern Tasmania and the Red Cross.
