In fine voice for huge festival

- KANE YOUNG

WITH more than 70 events and 100 individual performances in store, this winter’s Festival of Voices is going to be big — and you can read all about it with the program inserted in today’s Mercury.

Hobart will welcome more than 1000 singers for Australia’s biggest annual celebration of the human voice, which will feature international choirs, showcase performances, family events and workshops.

Highlights will include performances by Toni Childs, Sarah Blasko, Frente and The Umbilical Brothers, plus the traditional Big Sing and Bonfire.

The program was officially launched in Hobart this week, with two of this year’s visiting interstate acts — Melbourne musicians Sophie Koh and Braille Face — as special guests. Braille Face (vocalist/ producer Jordan White) will headline the festival’s Voices In The Barn program at Rosny, performing his moody “exploratory ambient pop” music on July 6.

Koh, meanwhile, will delve into her Chinese heritage and Western classical piano roots when she plays tracks from her new album Book of Songs at Hobart City Hall on July 9.

The Festival of Voices runs from June 30-July 16. Tickets are available from festivalofvoices.com
