MESSAGE STANDS THE TEST OF TIME

- — PENNY THOW

THE setting of a refugee camp will give currency to Elizabeth College’s production of the ’70s musical Godspell, which opens next week.

Composed by Stephen Schwartz, Godspell is based around a series of parables and the final days of the life of Jesus, set to modern orchestration.

When Elizabeth College produced Godspell 22 years ago, it was the first musical current director Justan Wagner ever saw.

College performing and visual arts manager Rebecca Wilson worked on that production, and has choreographed the current show.

“We’ve discussed it every year since I came to teach at the college,” Wagner said.

“There are no definitive guidelines and you can be really creative in the way you present it and where it’s set.

“We decided on a refugee camp because it’s a group of people who have very little hope. Initially they can’t agree on anything, but then they start telling stories, which helps them understand everyone is the same and of equal worth and that they should treat each other as such.

“We felt that it is really important in today’s climate to explore those themes and ideas.”

The production is a collaborative effort across departments. The cast is made up of 50 students from the Music Theatre course, with backstage work, set design and lighting also undertaken by students.

Wagner said there would also be a live band, with the music updated to include more current references.

“I hope the show will prompt audiences to reflect on the themes in relation to their own lives,” he said.

“I also hope they will get lost in the music, and the fun the students are having.”

Elizabeth College presents Godspell in the school’s theatre (Warwick St) from June 2-10, with shows at 7.30pm Wednesday-Saturday.

Tickets are $28 for adults and $25 concession, go to www.centertainment.com.au or phone 6234 5998 for bookings.
