Flames burn brightly to down Cripps

- RENEE GODFREY

KARANA Flames edged out Cripps Waratah 50-46 in Round 10 of the Southern Premier League netball competition on Wednesday night.

Cripps Waratah got an early break to be out by two, but that was immediately swallowed up, and it was not to see the lead again until the 10- minute mark of the last quarter.

Cripps started well giving Karana little room in attack, while playing a free-flowing game itself.

But it was unable to capitalise with Karana leading 15-12 at the first break.

Neither team was able to gain any ascendancy in the second quarter, with Karana taking a 27-25 lead into the second half.

Karana started the second half well, but two turnovers and two intercepts by Maddie Grace on the edge of the circle saw Cripps create opportunities.

But it was unable to convert, allowing Karana to still lead by two, 36-34, heading into the last quarter.

Cripps swung the momentum its way and had soon taken the lead, with the usually calm Karana attack end looking slightly unsettled.

With some strong defensive pressure creating turnover opportunities, Karana was able to regain its composure

Some beautiful feeding by Rachael Siely to her goalies under the post saw Karana run away in the end to win by four goals.

Player of the match was Rachael Siely.

In others matches AYC defeated Stingas 68-36 with player of the match going to Chloe Bennett from AYC.

Huon easily accounted for Palena winning 62-26.

Huon’s Christie Smith was awarded player of the match.
