Hawks’ Burgoyne eyes 17th season

- JON RALPH

SHAUN Burgoyne is determined to play on next year at age 35 as his stellar form continues into a 16th season.

The versatile Hawk signed a one-year deal for 2017 with suggestions it might be his last given the club’s premiership dynasty was ending. But he is eager to play on next year and reach 350 games.

Remarkably, Burgoyne’s GPS figures are better than at any time in his career, with his disposals and marks improving on last year’s figures.

He kicked a clutch goal in last week’s win over Sydney at the SCG and is not on the kind of salary that would make money a factor in Hawthorn’s decision.

Aware he could be tapped on the shoulder after last year’s departures of Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis, the 330gamer is adamant he still has the fire in the belly.

He has not missed a game since Round 18, 2013, and has missed just three since he started playing for the Hawks in Round 8, 2010.

Given his durability and consistent performances, he could push Adam Goodes’ record of 372 games by an indigenous player.

Teammate Isaac Smith this week marvelled at Burgoyne’s ability to stand up in big moments after his two-goal, 26possession game last week.

“Shauny is of the opinion he will just keep playing until his body can’t hold up any more,’’ Smith said.

“He never puts in a poor performance. He would have to go down as the most clutch player in AFL history.”
