Fire linked to wiring

-

THE Tasmania Fire Service has issued a warning about the dangers of unlicensed contractors after a Sandy Bay house sustained $500,000 damage in an electrical fire.

TFS crews from Hobart, Glenorchy and Clarence responded to a fire at the waterfront property on Monday, but were unable to contain the blaze before it severely damaged the building.

The fire burnt through the top two storeys of the threelevel home, with a neighbouring weatherboard home also slightly damaged.

Fire Investigation Officer Matt Lowe said yesterday the blaze had started following a prolonged build-up of heat in wiring underneath an oven in the kitchen.

“This morning we’ve had electrical inspectors along to assist in the fire investigation, and we have determined the fire originated under the oven in some electrical wiring,” Mr Lowe said.

“It was accidental and there would have been no way to prevent the fire.

“Eventually the heat buildup has ignited and caused the fire.”

Mr Lowe said the fire presented a timely reminder for homeowners to use only accredited tradesmen.

“Ensure you use a licensed electrical contractor to do any electrical work in your home,” he said.

Mr Lowe said he expected that the home, which was insured by its owners, would have to be demolished.
