Prospect Vale blitz snares division one crown

PROSPECT Vale Golf Club took out division one of the Tasmanian women’s pennant finals in spectacular fashion at the weekend.

The women defeated Ulverstone four matches to one in the Sunday morning final at Mowbray Golf Club.

Best for Prospect Vale were Lily Caelli, defeating Sharon Crowden 3&2, and Deidre Panton, beating Rosemary Paton 4&3. Julie Berne also beat Dianne Woodhouse 1up and Lindsay French defeated Karen Ashley 2up. Ulverstone’s sole victory went to Sarah Johnstone at No.1 who beat Tammy Hall 2&1.

Elderslie and Exeter golf clubs picked up the second and third divisions.

On Monday morning, Elderslie Golf Club defeated Burnie 3½ matches to 1½ in the second division. For Elderslie, Angela Cripps overcame Vicki Claridge 2&1, Tanya Downham defeated Pam Vant 5&3 and 90-year-old Betty Faulks beat Ann Forward 2up.

Burnie’s victory went to Marie Redman, who beat Julie Hannibal 2up, with Nona Sonner and Sally Todd squaring their No.4 match.

In the remaining final, Exe- ter defeated Orford 3½ to 1½ in division three.

Victorious for Exeter were Cindy Bowkett, beating Christine Bishop 4&3, Tania May, beating Annie Wells 3&2, and Jenny Hatton overcoming Fran Riseley 4&3. Orford’s Beth Batchelor beat Sue Clark 2up for the club’s only win, while Exeter’s Wendy Cuthbertson and Orford’s Claudia Johnson halved their No.1 match. LAUNCESTON was victorious in divisions one and two of the Tasmanian men’s pennant preliminary finals at the weekend.

In division one, the boys from Kings Meadows defeated North West champions Ulverstone 5½ matches to 1½ at Devonport Golf Club.

Best for Launceston were Greg Longmore, defeating Craig Walker 5&4, and Matthew Marston, routing David Allen 8&6. In the lower order Cameron Bell beat Sam Lockyer 4&3 and Brett Churchill defeated Xavier Lambie 2&1.

The remaining division one contests were halved, giving both clubs 1½ matches apiece.

Division two saw Launceston defeat Penguin Golf Club five matches to two with the best for Launceston Peter Westfield, Alex Masters, Daniel Hillier and Zac Bird. Wynyard took out the division three preliminary match, denying Launceston a third team in the state finals on June 18 at Kingston Beach.
