Tributes flow for Jill Singer
VETERAN journalist, broadcaster and university educator Jill Singer has died.
The sad news was broken on the former Today Tonight host’s Facebook page yesterday morning, just months after she revealed she was battling a rare terminal illness.
“Our friend, colleague, teacher, my wife, proud mother and grandmother, lover of life has ‘got on with it’,” the post read.
“So missed, a bright life who made a difference. Always loved. RIP.”
It’s less than two months since Singer married lawyer Anthony Brand in what she jokingly dubbed a “shotgun wedding”.
“It was one of the most beautiful days of my life,” Singer told News Corp.
“We met nearly four years ago, went and had dinner and hit it off straight away. We’ve been together ever since.”
Earlier this year, the Walkley Award-winning reporter revealed she had been diagnosed with AL amyloidosis, a rare blood disorder.
There is no cure for the disease, whereby amyloid-forming proteins in the blood attack the organs; in Singer’s case, her heart and peripheral nerves.
It followed a year of misdiagnosis, Singer said. Doctors had initially told her she was depressed, which led to several rounds of electro therapy.
Finally discovering the true cause of her illness came as a relief, she said.
“I was in so much pain I was actually sobbing and punching my stomach and of course I had no pain relief because I was told there was nothing wrong with me.”
