GEORGE Town doctor Tim Mooney has been recognised for his service to medicine, to doctors in rural areas and to the community.

Dr Mooney is one of nine Tasmanians to be awarded an AM in the General Division of the Order of Australia.

He has been a GP at the George Town Medical Centre since 1982 and also works as visiting medical officer at the George Town Hospital and Ainslie Nursing Home at Low Head.

Dr Mooney has also served as the local medical officer for the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, area medical officer for the Australian Defence Force and company medical officer for Bell Bay Aluminium.

He has been a board member of the Royal Flying Doctor Service Tasmanian branch, since 2015 and a John Flynn scholarshi­p mentor for medical students, since the 1990s.

He was a member of the General Practice Advisory Council of Tasmania and received the state award for service to other general practition­ers from the Royal Australian College of General Practition­ers in 2015.

Dr Mooney was also awarded the Australian General Practice Supervisor of the Year Award from the Royal Australian College of General Practition­ers in 2013 and won the Anzac Day Award, for service to veterans, from the Returned and Services League of Australia in 2012. He has been a Fellow, Royal Australian College of General Practice since 1992 and Fellow, Australian College Rural and Remote Medicine.
