AUSSIE PAIR’S FINAL PAIN

- LEO SCHLINK

ASH Barty and Casey Dellacqua have fallen short of French Open glory, losing the Roland Garros doubles final.

Attempting to become the first allAustralian tandem to triumph at the Roland Garros decider since Margaret Court and Judy Dalton in 1966, Barty and Dellacqua were rolled 6-2, 6-1 by American Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Czech Lucie Safarova.

The first Australian combination to reach all four major deciders in half a century, Barty and Dellacqua now have an unwanted grand slam “sweep” — defeat in the finals of all four majors.

They lost the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open title matches in 2013.

Even though they were swamped by Mattek-Sands and Safarova, they have plenty to be positive about. Mattek-Sands praised the Australians post-match after ending their 10-match winning streak.

“You guys have done a great job and you’re an awesome team. I’m sure we’re gonna be facing you again soon,” she said.

Barty walked away from tennis in 2014 to play cricket, while Dellacqua’s career almost ended in 2015 when she fell on court and suffered severe post-concussion symptoms.

Dellacqua, who has been dragged into the furore surrounding Court’s opposition to same-sex marriage, lost finals at the French Open in 2008 with Francesca Schiavone and two years ago with Yaroslava Shvedova.

South Australian Alicia Molik (2007) remains the last Australian woman to lift the doubles trophy in Paris.
