Chance to learn on the fly

-

CARL HYLAND FLY fishing connoisseurs will be beside themselves with a host of activities coming up around the state.

There will be a fly-tying session with members of the Tasmanian Fly Tyers Club at the Lenah Valley RSL on July 1 from 10am-4pm.

Guests are invited to come along with their vices plus any gear for hands-on experience. More inquiries can be directed to Stephenbutler@racingbutler.com

The fly-fishing fun will continue in October with Tasmania hosting the Masters Games from October 25-27.

It is a teams event with such venues as Talbots Lagoon, Pet Reservoir, Natone Fly Fishery, and parts of the Mersey River being hot locations where teams will be vying for titles and prizes.

Its worth noting the venues will be closed to all general angling during the period of the games.

Entrants must be 50 years old on December 31 this year to be able to enter. I believe you can still register teams. The contact for further information is Stacey Groves — phone 6447 5020 or email amg.rego@unisport.com.au

Teams from within Australia and overseas will be competing.

Bream fishing is taking off at this time as most inland waters are closed to trout angling. I am receiving many photos of nice fish every day, with most anglers vying for that 50cm bream.

Hot spots include Scamander where one angler has been scoring 47cm fish on bait, namely mussels and also small brown insect-like bibbed lures.

At Browns River at Kingston, other anglers have been having success on soft plastic worm imitations and no one colour stands out.

Some would have us believe that a particular colour only works on a given day, but this is not the case with fish taking all manner of presentations not only in plastics but hardbods as well.

I do find that a yellow-orange combination is a good colour across the board for bream but other species such as mullet and salmon also have a liking for this colour.

Bluefin tuna action is continuing out of places such as Pirates Bay but it’s hit or miss.

I viewed a great video last week of a nice fish being caught and landed. This particular fish was a nice school fish of about 13-15kg which seems to be the average from the Neck at this time.

A barrel of 109kg was caught last weekend and it just shows that you have to be there with lures out when the big fish come on.

Reports of bluefin busting up water get me and many others fired up as this scenario is a great opportunity where a popper or stick bait would get snavelled by either a school fish or a jumbo.

As I say, you won’t catch them sitting in your armchair watching the footy.
