TRAGEDY IN THE SUBURBS

Just after 9pm Thursday: A blue Commodore driven by a 42-year-old woman and carrying two friends leaves the Kmart car park in New Town.

As it travels south along Pirie Street a grey Magna comes out of a side street and it collides with the driver’s side of the Commodore, say police.

The Magna’s male driver and passenger flee in the direction of Swanston Street.

9.15-10.15pm: Emergency services work for an hour to cut the woman from the wreckage.

10.15-10.30pm: The victim dies on her way to the Royal Hobart Hospital.

Police work around the clock examining the scene and trying to identify the Magna’s occupants.

Yesterday morning: The woman is identified but her name is not released at the request of her mother.

Current: Police hunt those they say are responsible for the crash.
