Parents split on Gonski success

-

THE Tasmanian Association of State School Organisations has applauded the federal and state governments for the Gonski 2.0 funding model.

“The details behind the Gonski 2.0 funding are still not clear, but it appears that Tasmanian public school pupils will benefit from the new funding,” president Ant Dry said.

The Tasmanian Catholic Education Office said there would be continued access to low-fee Catholic education.

“Our strength as a system of schools will ensure parents and families will continue to access a low-fee Catholic education in Tasmania,” director John Mula said.

Education Minister Simon Birmingham said Catholic schools would receive $31 million extra over four years while Tasmanian Government schools would receive a $32 million increase.

“Tasmanian students will get the highest funding per student of any state,” he said.

The Tasmanian Catholic Schools Parents’ Council welcomed assurances from Catholic Education, but said the legislation was “flawed” and rushed through Parliament and criticised the Government for a lack of consultation.
