Play like team, coach tells woeful Chargers

- ADAM SMITH

HOBART Chargers women’s coach Dwain Davie has declared his group must shelve selfish instincts and return to team basketball after the side crashed to a horror SEABL loss last night.

The Chargers blew a 12point lead almost halfway through the third period to go down to lowly placed AlburyWodonga 82-67 after being outscored 48-27 in the second half.

All appeared on track when the hosts went on an 8-0 run in the third to open up their biggest lead of the night, only for the Lady Bandits to claw their way back and then put the after burners on in the last quarter.

It was the Chargers’ fourth consecutive defeat, and by the far the worst of 2017 according to Davie.

“Obviously it is challenging getting Mikaela [Reuf] into the group and getting her acclimatised and changing the way we play a little bit, but we should have done a better job than that,” Davie said.

“We pretty much gave that one away.

“A bit of complacency came in to start with, thinking we were on top and we took the foot off the pedal, then once they came back, we went individual, instead of sticking to the structure and offence which has got us to where we are.

“We are not that kind of team. It’s very disappointing that has crept into our game in the last couple of weeks.”

In her first home match for her new side Reuf finished with 18 points and 22 rebounds, while Kathleen Scheer had 19, five and seven assists.

Albury captain Emma Mahady drained a match-high 32 points on 70 per cent shooting and a perfect five from five from deep.
