Search goes on for crash runners

- PATRICK BILLINGS

POLICE are continuing their hunt for occupants of a car that slammed into another vehicle in New Town causing the death of a woman.

Police have identified suspects from the Hobart area possibly responsible for the fatal crash on Thursday night in Pirie St.

They suspect the men may have been breaking the law before the crash, which could explain why they fled the scene.

Police said their grey Mitsubishi Magna failed to stop as it drove along Roope St and ploughed into a Holden Commodore coming up Pirie St.

The Commodore’s driver, a 42-year-old woman from Hobart, suffered extensive injuries and died on the way to hospital.

A 40-year-old male passenger was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The two men in the Magna fled, while reportedly obscuring their faces, sparking a major search.

They are likely to have injuries because of the force of the impact.

“We haven’t been able to speak with these people yet but, obviously, we’d like to talk to them in relation to their movements and clarify whether they do have any involvement in the matter,” Detective Inspector Ian Whish-Wilson said.

“This is a significant incident and a tragedy so we’d encourage anyone that’s got any information to come forward and help us out.”

The Mercury has chosen not to release the victim’s name at the request of her family.

Information about the accident or missing men can be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at www.crimestoppers tas.com.au
