Tributes for crash victim

-

TRIBUTES have poured in for a 15-year-old girl killed in a crash at Old Beach.

A 20-year-old learner driver was yesterday charged with driving unsupervised at the time of the collision.

The teenage girl was one of two passengers in the vehicle when it veered off Baskerville Rd and hit a power pole rooffirst just after 6am on Saturday.

The girl, from West Moonah, died at the scene and the other passenger — a 17-yearold male — was in a stable condition after having surgery.

Friends of the girl have remembered her on social media.

“(She) was the most beautiful and kind-hearted girl,” friend Dale Chopping said on a GoFundMe page in her name.

Friend Shakya Treweek said the girl would be greatly missed.

“Very sad to hear what has happened, she’s a lovely girl, was loved by many,” she wrote.

Kathryn Edmundson described her as a “a beautiful princess taken way too soon”.

Police said the investigation into the “full circumstances” of the crash was ongoing.

The death was the latest of six road fatalities during the past fortnight, leading to Tasmania Police pleading with drivers to be careful.

“We’re really imploring motorists to slow down, drive to the winter conditions, it’s been a terrible period of tragedy on our roads and our sympathy goes out to the families who have been affected,” Assistant Commissioner Glenn Frame said yesterday.

“If you’re thinking that you’re driving to the conditions, slow down and take even more care. With cold weather coming up we really want people to slow down and take driving seriously.”

Police urged drivers not to tailgate, to be attentive, make sure their vehicle was roadworthy with windows properly defrosted and leave with enough time to reach their destination.

“It’s better to have your child at school a little later than not at all,” Mr Frame said.
