Congestion busters

TRAFFIC congestion in the city could be reduced if both Davey and Macquarie streets were made clearways. In addition, inside lanes on both streets could be made into bus lanes serviced by distinctly coloured small 20- to 30-seater shuttle buses running in a continuous loop. This lane would also be of great value to emergency vehicles. CCTV surveillance would ensure that drivers who abuse the bus lanes would be charged accordingly. Yassmin, hop on a plane and go back to Laos”. Rowan Dean doesn’t need to be told that suggesting an immigrant go back to their home country because you disagree with something they’ve said is racist garbage.

Why does Sky News pay this buffoon to just insult people, and where is the condemnation of his behaviour by his media colleagues? Enough is enough.

Hare-Clark defended

COLIN Knowles (Letters, July 12) really must check his facts. His claim that Australia is the only country in the world with the “ridiculous Hare-Clark voting system” is plain wrong. Ireland, Malta and New Zealand are three examples that come to mind. The ACT also adopted Hare-Clark several years ago, while the Senate has a similar system of proportional representation. He says “it should be one-person one-vote to stop people getting into government who could not get enough votes of their own”. When one votes in the lower house in Tasmania, you are only voting for one person. Subsequent preferences expressed on the ballot only come into play when the candidate you voted for receives a surplus of votes over the quota. These are then distributed to others according to the elector’s preferences on the ballot paper. Yes, many of these surplus votes will, eventually help to elect another candidate. Hare-Clark is widely regarded as the best and fairest voting system in the world; giving a wider representation in parliament of minority views — that’s democracy.

Sporting great

At Assen for the 10th time, 20 years and 343 days ago Valatino Rossi won his first race. At 38 years of age he won his 115th GP race. Could there ever be another rider with so much ambition to make a motorbike talk?
