JOBE PUZZLE

Playing future unclear until end of season

- JAMES MOTTERSHEAD

JOBE Watson says his playing future will not be clear until he sits down with coach John Worsfold once the season has run its course.

Watson, 32, was rested last week for the second time this season and said at yesterday’s Clash for Cancer launch the team’s performance may play a role in his decision.

“I always thought that given how quickly the season has moved, it’ll be something that I’ll probably reflect on after the year and chat to John after the season has finished and find out what I want to do, what he wants to do and what’s best for the club,” he said.

“Certainly what John’s been able to build with the team is tracking in the right direction. Every player wants to have success and it wasn’t since I was playing in 2004 that we won our last final, so I think the way that the team is tracking, it’s certainly a bright future for the Essendon supporters and I guess it’ll be something that I think about.”

Watson said the Bombers were always going to get better as the season progressed.

“I always thought that we’d probably be playing better football in the second half of the year,” Watson said. “When I looked at the side, I think there were 12 guys I hadn’t played a game of football with going into Round 1.

“That continuity is a real thing and the ability to be predictable to each other is not something manufactured, it actually makes a difference to how a side plays.”

The 214-gamer also hopes to be back in action on Saturday for the Bombers’ game against North Melbourne.

“The body’s feeling good, we had two six-day breaks so there was always the plan to either miss the Collingwood game or the St Kilda game,” Watson said.

“Thankfully enough I was able to sit there and sort of relax, it wasn’t as tight a game as perhaps what we thought, so the guys did a good job and I’ll be ready to go on Saturday.”

The Clash for Cancer game is in its 12th year after it began as a show of support for cancer sufferer and 2000 premiership player Adam Ramanauskas.
