Tassie charities in award race

- THE FINALISTS New Business

FIVE Tasmanian-based charities are among those vying for this year’s Telstra Business Awards.

Wynyard’s BIG hART, South Eastern Community Care (Sorell), Cancer Council Tasmania (Hobart), the Brave Foundation (Hobart) and Epilepsy Tasmania (Launceston) are finalists in the Charity section of the awards, which will be announced tomorrow night.

Telstra Group Executive and Awards Ambassador Kevin Russell said this year’s finalists were demonstrating what it takes to become “that” business – a leader in their field, a name that is trusted and admired, an organisation that inspires others.

“Many of the Tasmanian finalists are great examples of innovators and early adopters who have used technology to help them gain an advantage in the market. They show how technology is changing the way businesses operate today and delivering enormous benefits,” he said.

And a business owner with a sweet tooth and a goal to bake guilt-free alternatives for people with dietary restrictions is among the new business finalists. Coeliac-sufferer Lucy Millwood founded Drop Dead Bread when she found it difficult to satisfy her sugary cravings with what was on offer in the shops. So she set about creating a range of brownies, slices, cakes, truffles and biscuits that cater for the full free-from spectrum.
