Just be our natural selves
HIGH rise? Tasmania has too much natural beauty to need dependence on “exotic” tourism. Other countries have nothing to compare, and depend excessively on introduced buildings. Let’s be our natural selves and be grateful for our inherited natural beauty, in high demand. Melva Truchanas Kingston

Grow old gracefully
SO people at the University of Tasmania reckon their Sandy Bay campus buildings are not “fit for purpose’’ and they want buildings along the lines of IMAS (“Uni weighs big shift”, Mercury, July 20). What a load of bollocks. Ever noticed the old universities of Europe, or even Sydney or Melbourne? Yvonne Stark Battery Point

Expensive reef
AT $3 million I wonder who is going to eventually pay for the proposed artificial surf reef off Park Beach ( Mercury, July 16). Surely the proponents are not going to do it out of the goodness of their hearts. My feeling is that it will become a “pay for use” facility and the only people to benefit will be the owners. Carlton and Park beach have both got good but not always consistent surf and this inconsistency will also affect an artificial reef, so what benefit will it be? Mark Pearce Howrah
