Helping girls find excellence

-

WITH a vision for empowering girls for their future, St Michael’s Collegiate School is currently celebrating 125 years of outstanding education for girls.

The renowned Early Learning to Year 12 Anglican school in the heart of Hobart is well known for its strong tradition of academic excellence, opportunity and values-based education.

For many girls, life at Collegiate begins when they commence at the Junior School. Often referred to as Anglesea Village, this unique campus is well-known for its village-like setting and encompasses an Early Learning Centre and classes through to Year 4. As a specialist in girls’ education, Collegiate’s impressive academic results are evident from the early years - a result of the diverse curriculum, meaningful feedback and nurturing classroom environment. The teaching and learning framework is exceptional and includes small class sizes, differentiated learning and programs in which girls can explore their individual talents.

Collegiate’s ELC exceeds the national Quality Standards across all seven assessment areas and welcomes girls and boys from three years of age. Staffed by an exceptional team of early learning educators, the curriculum is built on the Early Years Learning Framework in combination with a Reggio Emilia inspired approach. “Our program is centred around respect and value for each child’s ideas and the children themselves have a strong voice in shaping the curriculum” explained ELC Manager Mrs Kylie Britten. “We recognise that children learn and express themselves in a variety of ways which is supported by our creative arts and nature play as well as Music, Library, Physical Education and optional ballet lessons taught teachers.”

A philosophy of exploration and outdoor play extends into Kindergarten. “We view our students as competent and capable learners who play an active role in the learning process,” said Head of Junior School, Ms Eva Perry.

“We provide an inquiry based program with a strong focus on nature education. You’ll often see our Kinder class utilising a range of learning spaces, including the Hobart Rivulet track, and making all by specialist noted gains in learning from their outdoor experiences.”

Describing the curriculum from Prep onwards, Ms Perry said: “Girls are provided with a rich inquiry based program designed to differentiate learning to achieve exceptional outcomes. “Collegiate aims to extend students in a variety of ways to allow them to flourish across academic, social, physical, emotional and spiritual domains.”

Along with firm foundations in literacy, numeracy, science and humanities, specialist teachers guide the students in Chinese, Faith and Life, Library, Art, Physical Education and Music. “With an excellent staff-to-student ratio, our girls receive every assistance to achieve their potential.” Ms Perry explained.

Students are encouraged to be involved in a broad range of sporting and co-curricular options, allowing them to learn new skills and develop individual talents. Popular options include coding, drama, humanities, gardening, maths club, yoga, origami and chess. A dedicated EDGE (Extension, Differentiation, Gifted Education) program is also available at Collegiate.

“Collegiate is a specialist in girls’ education. I would encourage any interested families to book a personal tour and come and experience the Collegiate advantage,” Ms Perry said.
