The day we hit Brazil for six

- DAVID DAVUTOVIC

SAM Kerr was a waltzing Matilda yesterday after scoring for Australia in its stunning 6-1 win against Brazil in the Tournament of Nations in California. The win meant the Matildas wrapped up the title after previous triumphs against the US and Japan.

RISING stars Jackson Irvine and Tomi Juric are the last pieces of the Socceroos summer transfer jigsaw in Europe, though any moves may not happen until the death.

Irvine, 24, will kick off the season with Burton Albion, which hosts Cardiff tomorrow morning, with at least three ambitious Championship rivals watching intently.

Leeds United, Derby County and Birmingham City are understood to be interested in the goalscoring midfielder, who won Burton’s player of the year award last season.

While Irvine will almost certainly switch clubs this window, Juric’s move from Swiss side Luzern is not as assured.

Juric is being watched by at least three Bundesliga clubs and has made a rapid start to the season netting three goals in three games, including a Europa League brace.

Wolfsburg, Stuttgart and Freiburg are believed to be interested in Juric, 26, though no formal offer has been tabled for the Socceroos’ No.1 striker.

Defender Trent Sainsbury will stay with Jiangsu Suning for the rest of the Chinese season with Fabio Capello refusing to offload him as it faces a relegation scrap.

Sainsbury, who made an appearance on loan to Inter Milan last season, had interest from several European countries including Italy after a solid Confederations Cup.

As often happens in a World Cup year, there is plenty of movement from players as they jostle for national selection.

The European transfer window closes on August 31/September 1, with January’s month-long window the only other chance for players to secure moves before Russia 2018.

The Socceroos’ qualifying fate will be decided in a month with group games away to Japan (August 31) and at AAMI Park against Thailand five days later.
