Just wild about music

COMPOSER Stephen Lias will discuss the influence of his fascination with the natural environment on his music at next week’s Musicological Society of Australia meeting in Hobart.

Lias’s music has been performed by ensembles including the Russian String Orchestra, the Oasis Quartet, and the Ensamble de Trompetas Simon Bolívar, as well as the Fairbanks, Shreveport and Anchorage Symphonies and the Rochester Philharmonic.

Many of his works have been inspired by residencies in national parks in the US and other countries.

Stephen Lias will present Wild Music: A Composer’s Obsession with America’s National Parks in the Conservatorium Lecture Theatre on Sandy Bay Rd from 5.30pm on Wednesday.

Entry is by gold coin donation, and free for MSA members.

Divide and conquer

THE University of Tasmania Community Music Program Wind Orchestra, conducted by Stephen King, will present a deconstruction of its musical talents at Christ Church in Longford this weekend.

In a departure from its usual concerts, the orchestra will subdivide into small ensembles to showcase a variety of instrumental groups, including sackbuts, French horns, clarinets, oboes, bassoons and more.

Each of the ensembles has selected its own repertoire to highlight their specific characteristics.

The concert begins at 2.30pm on Saturday. Tickets are $10, available at the door.
