Heat is on Diamonds hopefuls to shine

- AMANDA LULHAM

DIAMONDS coach Lisa Alexander says every position in the Commonwealth Games team is still up for grabs heading into two major international series in Australia and New Zealand.

The Diamonds last month attended a week-long camp after the end of the Super Netball season to prepare for the Quad series later this month and the Constellation Cup in October.

Netballers in the two Australian teams selected for the international series will have a lot on the line with Alexander and selectors still working out the dynamics of the side they will send on to the court in defence of the Commonwealth Games crown.

And of particular interest is the success of different shooting combinations during the Quad Series and Constellation Cup.

“We haven’t settled on anything yet,” Alexander said.

“It’s why we have the two different teams.

“And as you know, the goal attack position is very competitive.’’

Alexandra is delighted with the depth in the squad giving her plenty of options.

“We have people here who are not even in either team who want to show they deserve a spot.

“It’s a great position to be in.” Joining defending champion Australia on the Gold Coast for the Commonwealth Games — in order of their world rankings — will be New Zealand, England, Jamaica, South Africa, Malawi, Fiji, Wales, Uganda, Northern Ireland, Barbados and Scotland.

Preliminary matches will be played at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre from April 5-12.
