Quins win with pair of players back from sin bin

- TERRY RICHARDSON

HARLEQUINS defied an Australian Maritime College Vikings second-half fightback to win their Tasmanian Rugby Union clash on the weekend.

Not known for their fast starts, Quins put on a show early to secure a 19-5 half-time lead.

Josh Havea at open side was having a big game, scoring three tries in the end, and MitSHOCKED chell Eddington at hooker was also playing well as Quins looked poised to win easily.

But the Vikings steadied after half-time and Quins were forced to defend the red zone for a prolonged period.

While AMC could not capitalise, the net result was two yellow cards to Harlequins.

Subsequent minutes saw loose play from both teams that led to two AMC tries and it began the final 15 minutes trailing 19-24. But regaining the two players from yellows proved the difference and Quins ran away to win 43-24.

“Physicality in the forwards and then spinning the ball wide won us the day today,” club stalwart Jeff Altman said after the game.

The Glenorchy Stags met the Devonport Bulls in the second game.

Devonport has started to build over the past couple of weeks and this game was no different. It won the breakdown with a concerted effort to gain turnover ball at the tackle and never really looked like being headed.

The final score was 47-17. The game was the last in the state for leading statewide rugby player Josh Dorahy.

Dorahy deserves special mention for his consistency playing at No.8 for the Stags over the past few years.

Finally, the Taroona Penguins met the Hobart Hutchins Lions.

Despite poor conditions, Taroona smashed the hapless Lions 78-0.

One can only assume the Lions were looking ahead to later weeks and it will be interesting to see how they rebound.

Best for Penguins were Matt Brocklehurst in the front row and Jarod Cole at halfback.
