Put career dreams into action
CLAREMONT College provides a rich learning environment, giving students opportunities to gain qualifications in areas that have demand for young people as future employees.
With the potential to undertake VET courses alongside an extensive range of TASC subjects, students are able to find the best pathway to employment and further study while studying in a dynamic, engaging and supportive learning community.
The college’s 2017 musical Return to the Forbidden Planet provided opportunities for students as actors, dancers and musicians, but also for many of the VET courses in the college to be involved.
Students in the VET Certificate II in Construction course undertook the challenge of building a substantial set.
This gave them not only the skills needed to construct the multi-level set, but the experience of working with a client for a real-life project for a community event.
Students had to work to deadlines and were responsible for building the set in sections to transport to the theatre, where they assembled it for the performance season.
Also integral to the show was the Certificate II in Salon Assistant (Hairdressing) students, who researched ideas and created hair designs for each character on stage. Before each performance a group of students recreated the styles before the performers went on stage.
Some futuristic and clever make-up was applied by the Certificate II in Retail Cosmetics to ensure this show was a spectacular intergalactic experience each evening.
Certificate II in Hospitality students catered for the opening night function with an array of delicious canapes served to a very appreciative audience.
There is a range of VET programs at the college.
The Electrotechnology program, for students interested in careers in the electrical, electronics or telecommunications trades, is the only one of its kind in a senior secondary college in the South of the state.
The college is also proud of its Certificate I in Defence Force Cadets program, which is the only one in Tasmania.
This program has a long history of working with Hobart-based Australian Defence Force personnel to educate students about the skills required for a full-time defence force career. These skills are transferable to a career in emergency services.
Each student enrolling at Claremont College works individually with a specialised course counsellor.
Students are able to select VET programs that they can study together with pre-tertiary and TASC Level 2 courses, in order to broaden their opportunities for future employment and further education and training.
The college ensures they have highly qualified and motivated expert teachers on staff to allow this to occur.
