TIGER QUICKS GO TO WAR

- KYLE WISNIEWSKI

A BOWL-off is on the cards when the Tigers travel to the Sunshine Coast this month for their pre-season tour.

A 16-man squad has been selected to play five one-day games in Queensland to prepare for the JLT One-Day Cup.

Nine pace bowlers have been picked in the squad and talent manager Ben Rohrer is excited about some of the newer additions to the Tigers’ pace contingent.

Nick Buchanan is one who excites Rohrer. The tall quick already has experience with the Queensland squad and the Brisbane Heat.

“Nick Buchanan is one who has been on some lists for quite a while but his body hasn’t held up,” Rohrer said.

“If we can get him fit and firing then he will be dangerous in all forms of the game.”

Rohrer said Aaron Summers, 21, has had an eye-catching winter playing with the Darwin Cricket Club.

“Aaron Summers has been bowling some really good stuff up in the Darwin league,” Rohrer said.

“He was sent to the National Cricket Academy and got tested for speed and he was quicker than anyone there and that’s including some of the current first-class bowlers.”

Another bowler to make an impression is local talent Riley Meredith. “Riley has had some injury issues over the years so it’s exciting to see him on the park,” Rohrer said.

Some members of the squad are playing elsewhere during the pre-season tour.

“Obviously we have George Bailey coming back and then three guys who are at the NPS with [Ben] McDermott, [Jake] Doran and Mac Wright. There are really 20 we are picking from to get down to 14 for the [50-over] cup,” Rohrer said.

Tasmania will play one game against its fellow Tigers in the National Performance Squad, followed by games against Papua New Guinea and Queensland and two against South Australia.
