Dogs leap at a break in the showers

- LORETTA LOHBERGER

THERE are no dog days in sight for Tasmania, with forecasts of cloudy days and highland snowfalls.

A trough will move over the West Coast early today and weaken as it crosses the state during the day.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster David Matthews yesterday said west to south-westerly winds would persist across the state.

“On Friday, the westerly stream continues with showers about the west and south and fine elsewhere [with] patchy morning frost,” Mr Matthews said.

A cold front is also expected to cross the state on Saturday.

“The heaviest [rainfall] is probably Saturday, ahead of that cold front coming through and it’s mostly in the west of the state that we get that rainfall,” Mr Matthews said.

About 15-20mm of rain is expected in the West.

Showers are also forecast for the far south and Bass Strait islands on Saturday, extending to remaining districts later in the day.

For those keen to see the snow on kunanyi/Mt Wellington, snow showers are expected on Saturday.

At Mt Field, snow is possible tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday.

Mr Matthews said maximum temperatures in Hobart — ranging from 12C-15C for the next few days — were about average.

He said minimum temperatures would range from 2C to 8C.
