You’ll be blown away by Cascades draught

-

WRAPyourself up in a thick blanket of ambient dreamscapes and otherworldly sounds this Saturday night when Melbourne band Cascades bring the noise to Hobart.

Led by former Hobart musician Liam White (guitarist with prog-punk trio The Scandal and one of the founders of punk label Disconnect Records), Cascades — also featuring Max Mews, Sam Orchard, Sam Filmer and Toby Orchard — combine elements of crushing hardcore with experimental noise, with a strong underlying melodic thread topped off with swelling analog synthesisers.

Influenced equally by the atmospheric sounds of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Earth and The Cure, and the relentless aggression of bands such as Neurosis, Tragedy and Converge, Casades make music that “aims to reflect the struggle to maintain hope and positivity in a world poisoned by human greed, and tap into the crippling anxiety and powerlessness many of us feel about modern life in a society rife with fear and dread”.

The band recorded its selftitled debut album — featuring the singles Cold Bloom and Whitewater — late last year with Joel Taylor (Inverloch, Encircling Sea) at The Black Lodge in Melbourne, and are set to release a limited-edition vinyl pressing next month.

Get a taste when Cascades play at the Brisbane Hotel from 9pm on Saturday, with atmospheric, ambient Melbourne sludge four-piece SUNDR and local acts Departe and Break Through. Tickets are $10 at the door.
