Which politicians really pass test? Let’s find out

- KARINA BARRYMORE karina.barrymore@news.com.au

WE must audit the citizenship status of all politicians. No buts, no maybes, no delay.

It has been clearly demonstrated that we cannot trust them or take their word on the subject (or any other).

So why aren’t we — the voters, their bosses — demanding an audit? And why isn’t the Parliament, itself, demanding an audit?

Is it because once again we just want to sweep everything under the carpet — nothing to see here, folks. Too difficult, too complicated, haven’t got the time or energy to think about it.

Come on! (To quote tennis player Lleyton Hewitt.) This attitude has to stop.

Agree or disagree with single citizenship rules, it is the law. To have politicians breaking the law, going against the Constitution, and all of us willing to turn a blind eye is about as rock bottom as we can get as a society. Does that mean nothing, not even the ethics and honesty of our politicians, is worth fighting for?

These people are supposed to be our lawmakers, holders of the highest and most privileged positions in our land. Their decisions impact our lives and our futures every day.

Yet we are just sitting back and watching, like spectators, as they decide themselves — with all their party biases and agendas — about which parts of the law they will stick to and which they won’t, which parts the High Court will decide on and which will be left silent.

A month ago, they were unanimous that two Greens senators had to go, lose their positions and they even dabbled in accusations that they should have to repay their salaries.

Now, however, when it’s people in their own parties, in their own Cabinets even, they want to challenge the very law they supported a few weeks earlier.

The reason is that their power has been put at risk because some of their gang have become members of Parliament illegally (ignorance and wide-eyed surprise is not a defence). Instead of facing up to the problem, they are scavenging like desperate criminals looking for a loophole.

And all just to hold on to power, the only thing politicians fight for. It allows them to mould the law to do their mates a favour, allows them to live a very privileged lifestyle, always with an eye to setting up their future for when they leave politics. Lucrative consultancies and jobs with the mobs.

It is not up to the law-breaking politicians and their political powerhouses to decide what should be done about dual citizenships, it is up to us to demand it. It was good enough for them to happily and conveniently kiss goodbye to those pesky Greens politicians — but when it comes to the blue or red teams? The law is wrong!

Do shareholders trust companies to report profits without an audit? No. Do sports clubs trust members to join without working with children cards? No. Do companies hire employees without checking education qualifications? No.

In all sectors of our lives, we must provide proof, or are politicians above that too?
