Guests in the Chamber THE Hobart Chamber Orchestra will feature two special guests from Queensland, conductor Gwyn Roberts and pianist Jenni Flemming, at its concert on Saturday. Roberts is a former student and staff member at the Tasmanian Conservato­rium of Music and was principal cello with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. He has also been principal cello with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, and was musical director of the Queensland University Symphony Orchestra for 25 years. Flemming, who has performed as a soloist with major orchestras in Australia and given concerts around the world, will be the soloist for the Mozart Piano Concerto in A Major K414 and Andante from Shostakovi­ch’s Piano Concerto Opus 102 No.2 in F Major. Also featuring Concerto Grosso in D Minor by Vivaldi, Serenade for Strings by Dag Wiren, and the waltz from String Serenade by Dvorak, the concert will be held in the Conservato­rium Recital Hall on Sandy Bay Rd from 2.30pm on Saturday. Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 concession, available at the door.

It’s all action for the TSO THE Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Guy Noble, will explore the sounds of the silver screen at concerts in Hobart and Launceston next week. Much of music was written to enhance the thrill of the action in adventure movies, ensuring entertaini­ng and exciting concerts. The program will feature music from Star Wars, Star Trek, Spiderman, Superman, Jaws, Chariots of Fire, Out of Africa, The Lord of the Rings, Up!, E.T., Thunderbir­ds, Schindler’s List, Harry Potter and Pirates of the Caribbean. The concerts will be held in Hobart’s Federation Concert Hall next Thursday (September 7), and Launceston’s Albert Hall on September 9. Both concerts start at 7.30pm. To market, to market THE Sing For Your Life! Choir will entertain market-goers at Richmond, Glenorchy and Salamanca on Saturday. “Each family-friendly choir performanc­e will go for about 25 minutes and will feature gospel, African and other uplifting a cappella songs,” musical director Jane Christie-Johnston said. “At the same time we will be collecting donations for the Australian Children’s Music Foundation, to help provide music lessons and instrument­s for disadvanta­ged children across Australia.” The choir will perform at Richmond Market at 9am, the Nook Market at Montrose Bay Yacht Club at 10.30am, and on the Salamanca lawns at 12.15pm.
