Barnett’s school claims in dispute

- ALEXANDRA HUMPHRIES

QUESTIONS have been raised about the accuracy of education comments made by a Liberal MP at a forum to discuss redefining marriage.

Speaking last week at the Coalition of Marriage Tasmania forum, Lyons Liberal MHA Guy Barnett said legalising same-sex marriage would be the beginning of inappropriate sex-education in schools and the beginning of an erosion of parental rights.

“What is taught in our schools should clearly reflect the law of the land, so if the law of the land is changed to legalise same-sex marriage, schools will be obliged to teach gay and lesbian sexual activity in the classroom,” he said.

Deputy Labor leader Michelle O’Byrne raised Mr Barnett’s comments in parliament yesterday, asking Education Minister Jeremy Rockliff if the statements were accurate.

Mr Rockliff responded that the Respectful Schools initiative — launched this year — would not be changing.

Labor leader Rebecca White later said it was clear that the vote on marriage equality would not affect what was taught in school programs, despite Mr Barnett’s comments. In a statement yesterday Mr Barnett said Labor’s questions were an attempt to shut down “free and respectful debate” on same-sex marriage.

Federal Education Minister Simon Birmingham also has moved to reassure parents and faith-based schools that religious exemptions won’t be undermined should same-sex marriage be legalised.

He has also hit back at “No” campaign allegations that gay marriage would lead to an overhaul of teaching methods.
