Demons fans to vote on club name

- CONNOR MUNNINGS

AN end to five years of heartache and pain is the ambition of supporters of a ballot to rename the Hobart City Demons Football Club.

The TSL club is currently holding a ballot for members to vote for the club’s playing name, with the verdict to be announced on October 9.

In 2013 the North Hobart Football Club underwent a failed merger attempt with Hobart. After Hobart pulled out of the deal, North Hobart took the name Hobart City Demons.

“The North Hobart people lost their name and red and blue colours, and many have been asking why we can’t be North Hobart again,” head of the Bring North Hobart Home Group Craig Martin said.

“The North Hobart footy club is the most famous and successful club in Tasmania. We have won 28 premierships making us the second most successful footy club in a citybased footy competition in Australia,” he said.

Mr Martin said since the ballot was announced membership had risen from 150 to about 500.

“You can see the depth of feeling and passion for North Hobart,” Mr Martin said.

Mr Martin said that it was only the name of the club they wanted changed.

“The club has an outstanding coach in Kane Richter, a great footy program and a really promising, developing group of players who we all admire,” he said.

Hobart City Demons president Michael Denehey was contacted, but was unavailable for comment. Connor Munnings is a UTAS journalism student
