Night of Reckless Abandon

- KYLE WISNIEWSKI

IT was Reckless Abandon’s upset win that stole the show last night at Luxbet Park in Hobart.

The seven-year old mare came home strongly to win the fifth event of the night, the Go Racing Tasmania Pace C1 Only race over 2090m.

Earlier in the race Ultimate Courage, who came into the race at $11.60 got out strongly and led the field for most of the run. Favourite at $2.30 Resurgent Dream sat behind Ultimate Courage in the first quarter by two metres and wasn’t far behind at the 400metre mark.

Reckless Abandon, who entered the race at $20.50, showed great pace on the home stretch and cruised past the front of the pack to take out the victory.

Trainer Paul Belcher was all smiles after the race and said he was pleased to get the result for his team.

“It’s good for the group of owners,” he said. “For a couple of them it is their first horse.”

Belcher knew a win was just around the corner for Reckless Abandon, who had been showing glimpses in recent races.

“She has been a bit unlucky the last four or five runs,” he said. “Her speed was on tonight, which was good for us.

“That sort of race is what suits her because she can’t really do any work early.

“We always knew she would round them up late.”

Race three had a strong line-up, with Pachacuti starting favourite at $2.40 in the C7 or Better Pace over 2090m.

But the reigning Easter Cup champion was no match for stablemate Devendra.

The Todd Rattray-trained gelding finished in front of fellow Rattray-trained horses Pachacuti in second and Roger Ramjet in third.

Matthew Cooper-trained and driven Call Her Julie recorded back-to-back wins in Hobart after winning in race four in front of Sheer Strength.

Liv Lavish started Ben Yole’s night off well with a win in race one after beating favourite The Aussie.

Yole had his second win in race two with Hear The Call being driven to victory by Robert Walters.
