Police hunt gun-firing hotel robber

- PATRICK BILLINGS

POLICE are hunting a gunman who fired a weapon during an armed hold-up in Hobart’s northern suburbs.

A little before 3am yesterday the suspect, believed to be a masked male, stormed the Elwick Hotel at Glenorchy.

Demanding money, the man fired a shot into the wall, stunning staff and patrons. He made off with cash.

Detective Inspector Craig Joel commended hotel staff for following security protocol, which “kept them safe and helped secure evidence for police”.

A 1995 red or maroon Su- baru, believed to be used by the man, was stolen from West Hobart on Sunday night and was seen in Lindisfarne just before 3am.

Police want to hear from anyone who may have seen the vehicle, which was sighted elsewhere across greater Hobart.

The firearm produced by the man was distinctive with a torch attached to the barrel and a strap clipped to it.

“Police would like to hear from anyone who has seen this firearm before, or who may have had one like it stolen,” Insp Joel said.

Vantage Group general manager Martin Kelly said the man left the hotel with a small amount of cash.

“The offender has barged in through the security door as a patron was leaving the premises,” Mr Kelly said.

“Our staff are our priority and we are making sure they have all the support they need.”
