Groom exit sparks size debate

LIBERAL MP Matthew Groom’s decision to resign from Cabinet and withdraw from politics at the State Election has reignited debate over the size of the House of Assembly.

Political scientist Kate Crowley said Mr Groom, who in addition to being acting Attorney-General was Minister for State Growth, Energy and Environmen­t and Parks, had been managing an expanding portfolio “to the point where it might have expanded too much”.

“I think the Tasmanian government, whichever government it is — runs up against the problem of having limited numbers, a small backbench and too many portfolios therefore for ministers,” Associate Professor Crowley said.

“I think this could end up taking a toll on people.”

Tasmania’s Lower House was reduced from 35 members to 25 in 1998.

Premier Will Hodgman has said restoring the numbers was “not a priority”.

The Tasmanian Greens are in favour of restoring the Parliament, while Labor supports the principle but also says it is not a priority.

Denison has become the seat to watch ahead of the State Election, expected in March, after Liberal MP Matthew Groom’s shock decision not to stand for re-election. City Council with 58 per cent — or 8555 — of first-preference votes.

Ms Johnston yesterday said her focus was on the pending Board of Inquiry investigat­ion into the Glenorchy City Council and ensuring the community “gets the justice it deserves.”
