Tigers demolish SA to avenge first-round loss
THE Tassie Tigers have roared back into medal contention with a thumping 6-0 defeat of South Australia in Game 2 of their Australian Hockey League campaign in Perth.
After narrowly being edged 4-3 by Queensland in the first match, the Tigers controlled proceedings from start to finish against South Australia.
Ian McHugh opened the scoring with a field goal in the 10th minute.
Kieron Arthur added to his opening game hat-trick with another two penalty corner flicks, before Sam McCambridge also added a pair of field goals.
Kurt Mackey rounded out the comfortable win in the 50th minute.
The Tigers face Victoria tomorrow in a huge game for their medal chances.
Meanwhile, four Tasmanian teams are in the hunt for medals at the National Men’s Masters Championships in Hobart.
The Over-40 and Over-45 teams have both qualified for semi-finals today at 11am and 8.15am respectively.
Victory would ensure they play for gold tomorrow, while defeat would have them competing for bronze.
The Over-35s are also sure to play for a medal tomorrow but are relying on Victoria defeating NSW to qualify for tomorrow’s gold medal match at 10am.
In other results yesterday, the Over-55s fell 5-1 to Victoria, with Glenn Tremayne scoring, and the Over-65s fell 5-0 to WA.
In Newcastle, the Over-35 women defeated NSW 3-1 with goals to Anna Hughes, Belinda Page and Kate McKernan.
