President leads the way

CLAREMONT Football Club president Christine Carr’s hard work has been recognised with the Tasmanian Football Woman of the Year award for 2017.

The award was announced at yesterday’s AFL Ladies Lunch at Blundstone Arena, where Carr claimed the honour ahead of fellow nominees Cara Brooke (Kingborough Tigers) and Lindisfarne’s Tanya Millwald.

AFL Ladies Lunch event manager Blair Brownless said Carr was a deserving recipient.

“Christine has done some outstanding things for her club and football in general,” he said.

“This award is mainly about recognising leadership, and she [Carr] has showed a lot of that through setting up Claremont’s women’s team and sourcing government grants.”

Carr credits her achievement to the hard work from all involved with the Claremont Football Club.

“It’s not just myself, it’s that the whole club is involved in working to make the club successful on and off the field,” she said.

Carr believes women’s football in Tasmania has a promising future following the announcement earlier in the week that a Tasmanian-based side will enter the AFLW in 2019.

“Women’s football is only going to get bigger and better,” Carr said.

“The membership has grown since we’ve introduced a women’s team — they are part of our club, there’s no separate identity.”
