Wallaby wants to see end to draws

- IAIN PAYTEN

KURTLEY Beale says drawn Test matches feel “dull” and authorities should consider extra-time or an NRL-style golden point period to satisfy players and fans.

Beale was talking after the Wallabies’ second draw inside a month against the Springboks, after the sides followed up their 23-all result in Perth with a 27-all draw in Bloemfontein. The Wallabies have only drawn 18 times in 611 Tests, and never before drawn twice in a year, let alone twice inside a month. Against the same team.

The Bloemfontein stalemate came after the third Test of the British and Irish Lions tour of New Zealand in July also ended in a draw — and hence a tied series.

The Aussie side retained the Mandela Plate but the blank, emotionless faces of the players in the team photo afterwards told the story. The Wallabies had won the trophy without winning a game.

“It’s just a dull feeling, isn’t it?” Beale said.

“There’s no proper result, I feel like it’s just a bit of a dead rubber kind of thing. It’s a lot of mixed emotions.”

Beale said he wouldn’t mind if Test matches went into extra-time or a golden-point period to ensure a team wins.

“You’ve definitely got to look into it. Five minute break, or maybe a 10-minute break up on the Highveld just to get the oxygen in.” FROM OCT 1, 2017 2017/18 $19,000 $19,000 $16,000 $16,000 $16,000 $16,000 $17,000 $17,000 $18,000 $16,000 $16,000 $16,000 $18,000
