TASMANIA’S Over-40s team has claimed a bronze medal by beating Western Australia 3-2 at the National Men’s Masters Championships in Hobart yesterday.

Local star Mathew Selby capped an incredible week, winning the Over-40s Player of the Tournament award and being selected in the Australian team.

It was Selby that sparked the home side, scoring a field goal in just the third minute before the visitors equalised on quarter time.

After a goalless second term, Tasmania buried the match with goals to Glenn Lucas and Tassie skipper Brett Withington in the third quar- ter. A late WA goal ensured a tense finish but the Tasmanians played the final moments to perfection to continue coach Stephen McMullen’s terrific Masters record.

“This is a great result and in fact we are a bit unlucky not to be playing in the final after a great effort in the semi where we fell 5-4 to Victoria after the final siren,” McMullen said.

“Selby’s award is very well deserved and it was nice to have him back playing with us in this age group and great to see him selected in the National side, while Withington was named captain of the Over 45s.”

But it was a different story for the Over-35s and Over-45s, who were beaten 4-1 by ACT and 4-2 by NSW respectively in their bronze medal matches.

After starting the tournament as firm favourites, injuries took a heavy toll on the Over 35s, with tournament leading goal scorer Luke Doerner and Marcus Richardson unable to start the match.

In Perth, the Tassie Tigers drew 1-1 with Victoria thanks to a goal to Sam McCambridge and remain in the hunt for a top-four playoff position.

The Van Demons suffered their third consecutive loss, this time 4-0 to tournament leader Victoria.

The under-13 boys and girls continue to hunt for medals, both sitting with three wins from the opening five matches after defeating Northern Territory 5-0 and 2-0 respectively.
