Overhaul call in Cup

- RUSSELL GOULD

FINDING a way to get players more “invested” is the only way the Internationals can break a US stranglehold on the Presidents Cup, says Australian star Adam Scott.

And future International captain Ernie Els wants to pick his own team when the event returns to Royal Melbourne in 2019, and not be dictated to by the US PGA Tour rules.

Scott said it was time the Internationals, a group of Aussies, South Africans, Canadians, Asians and South Americans, picked on world rankings, did “a bit more” to end 20 years of American dominance.

The International team has been blown away by the powerful US team in New York, the 19-11 victory the greatest margin since the US won by eight points in 2000.

It was also the seventh straight US win in the biennial event and the 10th in 12 Presidents Cup contests.

Absolute embarrassment was avoided with seven wins from 12 singles matches on the final day at the Liberty National course.

But Scott, who defeated US Open champion Brooks Koepka in his match, said more work was needed in the years the Presidents Cup isn’t played to make the Internationals a better team.

Scott said the US had a great advantage because it plays a teams event every year, with the Ryder Cup against Europe held in even-numbered years.

“I think everyone who is involved in the Cup going forward should get together, talk about it, what the United States team have done the last few years — and try and come up with something to get our guys a little more invested in it,” Scott said.
