Room to move on mum’s wish list

- HELEN KEMPTON

SAMANTHA Trutzl says she is one of the lucky ones, despite Hobart’s tight rental market.

While she wants a bigger property to rent to allow for her growing family, she currently has a roof over her head and solid family support in case things go wrong.

The 30-year-old single mum to a nine-year-old daughter is about to have her second child and her twobedroom place on Hobart’s eastern shore will be too small.

She said while getting a property to rent in Hobart was a relatively simple exercise a few years ago, it is now almost impossible with so many people competing for the handful of places available.

Many of her friends are in the same situation.

Ms Trutzl’s lease is due to run out in December and she wants to have a bigger house locked in by then.

However, she is struggling to secure anything from the many properties she has applied for.

“I have been applying for a couple of places a week, but to no avail,” she said.

“Unfortunately, as a single mother, you can also be put in a category.

“I have brilliant references but many of the people going for the bigger houses are twoincome families and I cannot compete.” Ms Trutzl has taken 12-months leave without pay to have her baby and most larger properties are outside her financial reach.

“Hopefully I can re-lease this place until I find another. At least we are likely to have a roof over our head as we hunt for more suitable accommodation. I also have great family support which many do not and I feel for them.”
