Mercury (Hobart)

Escape route starts in Tassie

-

PIONEERING, progressive New Jersey mathcore metal moguls the Dillinger Escape Plan will visit Hobart for the first — and last — time ever next week.

Named after infamous US bank robber John Dillinger, the Dillinger Escape Plan — Greg Puciato (vocals), Ben Weinman (guitar), Liam Wilson (bass), Billy Rymer (drums) and Kevin Antreassian (guitar) — formed in 1997 and went on to influence the likes of Bring Me the Horizon, Architects, Metallica and Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine.

Just last month, the band was honoured with the Outstanding Contribution to Music prize at the 2017 Association of independent Music Awards.

Over the past two decades the DEP have earned a reputation as one of the world’s most intense live acts; combined chaotic sonic onslaughts, technical complexity and eclectic experimentation on their albums Calculating Infinity, Miss Machine, Ire Works, Option Paralysis and One of Us Is the Killer; and put their name to a number of important causes and social movements.

Now, after 20 years of wreaking sonic havoc everywhere they go, Dillinger Escape Plan are touring the world for the last time, and will break up at the end of the touring cycle for what turned out to be their final album, last year’s Dissociation.

Puciato has been quoted as saying that the band still enjoyed writing, recording and performing together, but had “started to reach what felt like a thematic conclusion” to the project.

The group’s final ever show will take place in New York City on December 29.

They are performing seven shows across Australia this month, with the Aussie leg of the tour to kick off next week with the band’s first ever trip to Tasmania.

Southern Extremeties Productions and Skyfire present Dillinger Escape Plan playing a licensed all-ages show at the Odeon Theatre from 8pm next Friday (October 13).

Tickets are $74.50, go to www.oztix.com.au for bookings.
