Follow this trail around the country

-

FANS are hot on the trail of Australian country music patriarch Bill Chambers, who is set to play at Copping on Saturday night.

Chambers grew up in a small town in South Australia and formed his first band, the Deerstalkers, while still in high school.

He married his wife Diane at age 20, and they had two children you might have heard of — Nash and Kasey Chambers.

The Chambers family “went bush” for a few years when Nash and Kasey were still toddlers, and spent many nights singing country classics around the campfire.

When the family reemerged from the wilderness in 1987 they formed the Dead Ringer Band and spent the next few years touring the world and releasing the albums Red Desert Sky, Home Fires, Living in the Circle and Hopeville.

The Dead Ringer Band finished in 1998 when Bill moved to Sydney, where he started his own label, Reckless Records.

He had also become an indemand studio musician and producer, working on albums with Catherine Britt, Audrey Auld and countless other country musicians.

In 2002 Chambers released a solo album called Sleeping with the Blues, which was nominated for a 2003 ARIA Award for Best Country Album.

When not touring the world playing in Kasey’s band, Bill has found time to write and record further solo records Frozen Ground (2006), Drifting South (2009) and Live at the Pub Tamworth (2013).

In January last year Chambers released his first album in four years, Cold Trail, leading to another Best Country Album ARIA Award nomination.

He will perform songs from Cold Trail at the Copping Community Hall from 8pm on Saturday, joined by Sydney singer-songwriter James Van Cooper. Tickets are $35.
