Circus performers reach new heights

-

THINK

you know what a circus is, or can be? The cast of Papillon have other ideas, and they’re coming to show Tasmania next week.

Not your average circus, Papillon is a sophisticated and sexy blend of circus skills, cabaret performance and comedy, which challenges audiences’ expectations from the opening minute.

Created around classic archetypes of vintage circus, Papillon brings the traditional circus discipline into the modern era, surprising crowds with the spectacular routines interspersed with funny, silly and absurd moments.

It’s all done in gorgeous costumes, to a soundtrack of unique bespoke music.

Since being named Best Circus and Physical Theatre Show at the Adelaide Fringe Weeklies in 2014, Papillon has gone on to tour Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Queensland and regional Western Australia, selling out seasons and making quite an impact on audiences wherever it goes.

The West Australian noted that “the audience spent half the time gasping in amazement, and the other half howling with laughter”.

Directed by Idris Stanton, Papillon features a cast of Melbourne-based performers — including Joshua Phillips, Amy Nightingale-Olsen, Claire Andrews, Matthew Anderson, Tim Rutty and Elena Kirschbaum — who have previously worked with leading companies such as Circus Oz, Circa and Casus.

Highwire Events and Entertainment presents Papillon at the Theatre Royal from 7.30pm on October 11, 12 and 13. Tickets are $30-$65, phone 6233 2299 or go to www.theatreroyal.com.au for bookings.

Papillon will also be at the Devonport Convention and Entertainment Centre on October 14.
