Fish waste shock

I AM astounded to see Tassal has applied to the Department of Environment and Energy to dump fish waste into Macquarie Harbour, on the premise that if done on an outgoing tide all should be fine.

Dead zones have already been created because of build up of fish faeces below fish pens.

It is also disappointing that invitations for public comment are not made more readily available or brought to the attention of the public particularly when they relate to such important environmental issues and of recent times the public interest in finfish farming in general. I am sure the public comment in the most part would be a simple No to this application. Surely there is a land based solution, or take the waste a minimum three miles offshore and have the boats record the GPS track of dumping points. I fear for the Okehampton Bay Lease on the East Coast and other inshore areas. The Government and Opposition seem content to turn a blind eye and continue to state they have implemented the strictest of guidelines. THE channel, Macquarie Harbour, where next. Has to be Okehampton Bay. Kudos to Huon Aquaculture, on television ads A new way to have your say themercury.com.au readers have a new way to have their say.
