Buckingham earns draw

- ROB McGUIRE

BUCKINGHAM put up a spirited fightback in the first round of the Bowls Tasmania South DJ Motors Premier Division season on Saturday to record a thrilling draw against premiership favourites Rosny Park.

Rosny Park has never beaten Buckingham on its synthetic green but that looked like it was going to change when it was leading by 18 shots with 25 ends to go before Buckingham stormed home to force an unlikely draw.

Alvin Cooke played great bowls to lead the Buckingham come back.

Cooke was in front of David Genford by only three shots after 13 ends but won nine of the remaining 12 ends to win by 16 shots.

With 14 year old Lucas Howell leading well in his Premier Division debut, Keghan Booth defeated Mick Sweeney by six shots.

Rosny Park won the other two rinks with Lee Schraner defeating Don Holland by 13 shots and Connor Munnings fought off a solid comeback from Mick Taylor before winning by nine shots.

Glenorchy Rodman was too strong for Beltana, winning by 11 shots.

Josh Baker was in good form against his old club, beating Owen O’Driscoll by 15 shots.

Cameron Tegg’s rink was dominant, beating Michael Coppleman by 14 shots.

Collecting points for Beltana were Nic Courto with a solid win over Tony Vince by 14 shots and Shane Young who defeated Glenorchy Rodman’s new skip Luke Turner by four shots.

New Norfolk defeated Claremont by 16 shots and Sandy Bay had a solid 20-shot win over Derwent City.

Peter Bannister was Derwent City’s only winner, defeating Josh Tegg by 21 shots.

Brighton was soundly thrashed by reigning premier Kingborough by 60 shots.
