Scorpions batters silence the Roar

- ADAM SMITH

TASMANIA is still yet to register a victory at domestic level this summer after the Roar crashed to a heavy loss at the hands of South Australia in Adelaide.

With the Tigers going 0-3 in Perth in a horrendous start to their JLT One Day Cup campaign, the women went down to the Scorpions yesterday after their season opening loss to Western Australia.

Batting first the visitors struggled to 216, unable to get any serious momentum.

Erin Fazackerley — niece of the state’s first female Australian representative Kim — was the shining light with a quickfire 41 from 35 balls towards the end but aside from Irish international Isobel Joyce (40), there was little support.

The total still looked defendable when Katelyn Fryett and Veronica Pyke struck in the first four overs of SA’s innings, reducing the Scorpions to 2-7.

However a 202-run stand between New Zealand star Sophie Devine and Tahlia McGrath put the contest beyond doubt.

Devine cracked a brilliant 117 from only 85 balls, hitting 13 boundaries and four sixes in the process, while McGrath provided the perfect foil with 80 in a partnership that came from only 193 balls.

While both fell in sight of the finish line South Australia cruised to victory by six wick- ets with almost 14 overs spare. FORMER Queenslander Nick Buchanan has replaced Jackson Bird in Tasmania’s squad for its two matches in NSW.

The side flew to Sydney yes- terday still licking its wounds from three comprehensive defeats out west.

It will face South Australia at North Sydney Oval tomorrow.
