Greenwood stars with 30 points in state league opener

-

THE first round of the State Basketball League tipped off at the weekend, with Kingborough-Huon’s Josie Greenwood proving a standout.

The straight shooter managed a round-high 30 points against the BTAS Performance team, but it was not enough to guide her side to victory, as it fell 19 points short, losing 88-67. The sister of AFL star Hugh Greenwood also shares the lead in the women’s MVP voting after Round 1 alongside Penguin’s Ellie Collins, on 16 votes.

Hobart-Moonah’s men’s side opened its campaign in reasonable fashion, recording wins in its first two games before losing to Somerset Heat 73-66 in its final match of the round.

The Penguin Blues proved the pick of the bunch after both its men’s and women’s teams clinched spots at the top of the ladder to round out the season openers.

Penguin’s women’s side went close to following its men’s team in finishing the round undefeated, but fell short to Hobart Phoenix 69-65.

The perfect start for Penguin’s men’s team was helped by former Hobart Chargers player Zac White who finished the round in third place in the competition’s MVP list on 16 votes.

White starred in the Blues’ first game of the round, netting a gamehigh 26 points. The three straight wins for the Blues sees the side ahead of second-placed Somerset on the ladder by percentage.

Round 2 of the State Basketball League is on November 4-5 at the Kingborough Sports Centre.
